Petit Mot privacy policy

Effective: October 19, 2026 (version 0.2.0)

Petit Mot is a free browser extension that helps families learn French while they browse. It works on your device and offline, and it collects no data.

01What we collect

Nothing. There are no servers, accounts, ads, analytics, crash reports or telemetry. The extension makes no network requests of its own, and its content security policy blocks them (connect-src 'none'). Its 1,500-word French pack and its built-in voice are files inside the extension, so it works offline. No remote code is loaded.

02What the extension reads

Petit Mot reads a web page only when you click its button or press its shortcut on that page (Chrome's activeTab), or on a site where you turned on Always sprinkle, which asks Chrome for permission for that one site. It looks for common English words and changes a few of them to French on your screen. It does nothing else with the page, and page text never leaves your computer. It stays off on sign-in, payment, banking, email and document pages.

03What is stored

  • On your computer, in the browser's extension storage: learner nicknames and emoji avatars you type in, each learner's word progress, XP and family streak, Word Hunt and Défi results, and your settings.
  • Chrome sync (optional, on by default). With Settings → Sync progress with Chrome on, a compact copy of nicknames, avatars, progress, XP, streak and shared settings is kept in chrome.storage.sync. If you're signed in to Chrome with sync on, Chrome copies it to your other computers through your own Google account, the same way it syncs your bookmarks. Petit Mot has no server, never sees your account, and makes no network calls for this. You can turn sync off at any time.
  • Backup files are saved where you choose. Restore from file reads only a file you pick. Nothing is uploaded.

Settings → Delete everything removes all of it, including the synced copy. Uninstalling the extension removes its local data.

04Pronunciation and voices

By default Petit Mot uses its own built-in voice: audio files that ship inside the extension. Playing them needs no internet and sends nothing anywhere.

In Settings → Voice you can choose a system voice instead. A voice installed on your computer stays on your computer. Some voices, such as Google français, are online voices and are labelled "online voice (sent to Google)". Only if you pick one of these, Chrome's speech service sends the word or short phrase being spoken to Google to make the sound. It never sends page text, names or progress. Petit Mot never switches to an online voice by itself.

05Challenge codes

Défi codes are text that you copy and share yourself. A code contains only a nickname, an emoji, a list of French words, a quiz number and a score. Petit Mot doesn't send codes anywhere.

06Sharing

We never sell, transfer or share data, because we never receive any. We don't use or transfer data for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose, or to determine creditworthiness or for lending.

07Permissions

  • activeTab and scripting: change a few words on the page you clicked Petit Mot on, and run Word Hunt there.
  • storage: keep learners, progress and settings in the browser, plus the optional Chrome sync copy.
  • sidePanel: show word cards, review, the family page, Défi and settings beside the page.
  • offscreen: play the built-in voice's audio files when you click a word on a web page.
  • tts: use a system voice if you choose one, or as a fallback if a built-in clip can't play.
  • Optional site access: requested one site at a time, only when you turn on Always sprinkle on this site.

08Families and children

Petit Mot is made for families: a parent sets it up and learns alongside their children. It has no accounts, no ads, no in-app purchases and no chat, and it collects nothing from anyone, including children. Nicknames you type stay in your browser (and your own Chrome sync, if on). They are never sent to us or anyone else.

09Open content

The word pack is built from Lexique 3.83 and Wiktionary and is shared under CC BY-SA 4.0. The built-in voice clips were made with Piper and the SIWIS French voice (CC BY 4.0) and, because they read the word pack, are also CC BY-SA 4.0.

10Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. A copy also ships with the extension's source.
